World of Solitaire: What’s in a Name?

If there’s one game whose name has evolved significantly over the last 200 years, it’s Solitary Patience. Traditionally, the games we now call Solitaire were once referred to as Games of Patience. While researching the history and background of Solitaire for this website, I discovered a wealth of information in numerous books.

Patience: Meaning and Background

The name "Patience" originates from French, although the game’s origins seem to be from elsewhere. Most historical records mentioning “games of Patience” or “Grand Patiences” are from Europe. The oldest reference to a Patience game (patience spiel) comes from a German book dated 1798, where the term referred to a two player card game. Over time, Patience games became known as Single Player card games, with the name spreading across Europe, particularly in countries like Sweden and Germany.

Today, the name Patience is still used in some regions, such as the Netherlands, Belgium and French speaking countries, while in other places, the game is more commonly known as Solitaire.

The Unbeatable Popularity of Single Player Card Games

Single Player card games have always been popular and will likely continue to be. Solitaire appeals to people of all ages, offering a relaxing, low pressure way to pass the time. One of the greatest benefits of our game is that it helps train your brain, making it an ideal game for all ages, especially for older adults looking to keep their minds sharp. Whether you have just a few minutes or want to unwind, Solitaire provides quick, satisfying gameplay.
