Objective of the Game

The aim of Klondike is to transfer all the cards to the four foundation piles in the top right corner of the screen. Each foundation must be built from Ace to King, all in the same suit. You start with seven columns of cards (the tableau), with only the top card of each column face up. Your task is to uncover the face down cards by moving the face up cards to other columns or directly to the foundations.

Game Setup and How to Start

When starting a new game, the tableau is laid out in seven columns, with the number of cards increasing from left to right. The first column has one face up card, the second has two cards (one face up), the third has three cards and so on. The remaining deck of cards forms the stockpile, from which you can draw new cards as needed.

• Tableau: The seven rows of cards on the main playing area.
• Foundation: The four empty spaces in the top right corner where you will build your suits from Ace to King.
• Stockpile: The remaining cards, placed face down in the top left corner, to be drawn as you play.
• Waste Pile: The face up cards drawn from the stockpile and placed beside it, waiting to be moved to the tableau or foundation.

Card Values and Sequences

Klondike Solitaire uses a standard deck of 52 cards divided into four suits: Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs and Spades. The cards are arranged in descending order, from King to Ace, with alternating colours (red and black). Only sequences of alternating colours can be built on the tableau, while the foundation piles must follow the suit in ascending order, starting with the Ace and ending with the King.

How to Play Klondike Solitaire

Playing Klondike Solitaire is simple, but mastering it can be tricky. You move cards one by one between the tableau, stockpile and foundation, following these rules:

• Move cards from the stockpile to the waste pile, then from the waste pile to the tableau or foundation.
• Cards on the tableau must be placed in descending order (King to Ace) and must alternate between red and black.
• To move cards to the foundation, you must build each suit in ascending order, from Ace to King.
• If you clear a column on the tableau, you can fill the empty space with a King.

The game ends when all cards have been successfully moved to the foundation piles or when no more moves are possible. Use the Undo button if you want to rethink a move or try a new strategy!

1 turn vs. 3 turn Solitaire

Klondike Solitaire can be played in two main versions: 1 turn and 3 turn. The 1 turn version is easier, as you draw one card from the stockpile at a time, while the 3 turn version is more challenging because you draw three cards at a time, making it harder to access certain cards. If you're new to Klondike Solitaire, we recommend starting with the 1 turn version before trying the more difficult 3 turn variant.

Solitaire Scoring

Your score increases as you move cards to the tableau or foundation. You can track your score to challenge yourself and aim for a new personal best. The game also includes a clock that tracks how long it takes you to complete each round. Here’s how the scoring works:

• Moving a card from the waste pile to the tableau: +5 points.
• Moving a card from the waste pile to the foundation: +10 points.
• Moving a card from the tableau to the foundation: +10 points.
• Flipping a face down card on the tableau: +5 points.
• Moving a card from the foundation back to the tableau (advanced play): -15 points.

The clock doesn’t affect your score, but if you achieve the same high score twice, the fastest time will be saved as your best result.

Playing Solitaire with Real Cards

While Solitaire is mostly played online these days, it can also be played with a real deck of cards. If you want to try it offline, here’s how to set up the game:

• Shuffle the deck and deal seven columns from left to right.
• Deal one card face up in the first column, two in the second (with the top one face up), three in the third and keep going until the seventh column has seven cards with the top one face up.
• The rest of the deck forms the stockpile.

The rules for playing with real cards are the same as when playing online, with the goal being to move all cards into the foundation piles.
