Rules of Vegas Solitaire
Vegas Solitaire, also known as Klondike Solitaire with vegas scoring, is a variation of the classic solitaire game Klondike. The primary difference is the scoring and betting system, which adds a gambling element. Here are the rules for Vegas Solitaire:
- Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
- Tableau setup: Deal the cards into seven columns (piles or stacks) on the tableau. The first column has one card, the second has two cards, and so on, until the seventh column has seven cards. Make sure the top card of each column is face up while the rest are face down.
- Stock and waste piles: The remaining cards form the stockpile. A waste pile is used for cards drawn from the stock that cannot be played immediately.
- Drawing from the stock: Unlike in traditional Klondike Solitaire, you can only go through the stock once or thrice, depending on your chosen variation. In the one-pass variation, you can only go through the stock once, turning over one or three cards at a time. In the three-pass variation, you can cycle through the stock three times.
- Foundation piles: Create four foundation piles, one for each suit, starting with the Ace and building up in ascending order (from Ace to King).
- Moving cards: You can move cards between tableau columns, following the rules of traditional Klondike Solitaire. Place cards in descending order and alternating colors (red and black). For example, you can place a red six on a black 7.
- Turning over tableau cards: When you expose a face-down card in the tableau, turn it face up.
- Moving cards to the foundation: Move cards from the tableau or waste to the foundation piles whenever possible. Build foundation piles in ascending order and by suit (from Ace to King).
- Empty tableau spaces: When a tableau column is empty, you can place a King there (along with any cards on top of it, maintaining the same order).
- Betting and scoring: In Vegas Solitaire, you “buy” the deck for a specific amount, usually $52 ($1 for each card). Each card moved to the foundation earns you $5. The goal is to earn more than the initial investment by completing the game. If you don’t move enough cards to the foundation, you’ll have a negative score.
The game ends when you’ve exhausted all possible moves or successfully moved all cards to the foundation piles. Remember that Vegas Solitaire is a game of luck and skill, so winning is not always possible.
